The Nanjing Massacre[c] or the Rape of Nanjing (formerly romanized as Nanking[d]) was the mass rape and murder of Chinese civilians, noncombatants, and prisoners of war by the Imperial Japanese Army in Nanjing, the capital of the Republic of China. Nanking (Nanjing), the Nationalist capital, fell in mid-December 1937, and the liquidation of that city and its inhabitants became known as the Nanjing Massacre. The 1937 invasion and massacre in Nanjing (or Nanking) by the Japanese caused the suffering of tens of thousands of Chinese civilians.

Published: written by Madison Whipple, BA History The Nanjing Massacre, commonly known as " The Rape of Nanking," was an infamous war crime committed by the Japanese military in and around the then capital of China, Nanjing, after it fell to the Imperial Japanese Army on (at the time, Nanjing was known in English as Nanking). In December 1937, Imperial Japanese forces captured the Chinese city of Nanking, unleashing an orgy of violence now known as the Nanking Massacre or Rape of Nanking. Over six harrowing weeks, an estimated 200,000-300,000 civilians were killed, and tens of thousands of women suffered sexual violence. The six weeks of carnage would become known as the Rape of Nanking and represented the single worst atrocity during the World War II era in either the European or Pacific theaters of war.
